GUIDE SHEET FOR THE ART SECTION:

Your art section will include five (5) selections and must contain the following criteria:

FLAT PIECES: 2
These can include mediums of water color, oils, tempera, photography, mosaic, drawings, or anything else that is done on a two-dimensial field.

REQUIREMENTS FOR FLAT PIECES:

1.) One piece must be from or before the Renaissance. In other words, the time period of ancient through the Renaissance Period which officially ended around 1500.

2.) The second flat piece must be of a more modern period. That means 1500s to the present.

CATCH: THERE MUST BE AT LEAST 500 YEARS BETWEEN WORKS OF ART.
So if you find a piece you like that was done in 1650, your older piece cannot be later than 1150.

SCULPTURE OR THREE DIMENSIONAL WORKS OF ART: 2
These can include sculpture (stone, bronze, and so on), architecture, carvings, masks, or even metal works.
It CANNOT include fabrics, foods, toys, or jewelry.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SCULPTURE OR THREE DIMENSIONAL PIECES:

1.) One must be Renaissance through the present as with the flat pieces above.

2.) The other, again, must be from Ancient through Renaissance and both must have 500 years between them.

NOTE: At least one of the flat pieces or sculpture pieces MUST have a known artist.
See the discussion below on artists.

FOLK ART: 1
This can include fabrics, foods, toys, or jewelry. This can be from any time period, ancient up to modern. If you find a selection that you like and are not sure which category to put it in, please ask. DON'T just assume... remember what they say about assuming!

THE FORMAT:

INTRODUCTION:
Include one short page introduction of typical art characteristics found in your region of the world. If you are including Africa, you might make a reference to its usefulness and connection to tribes. Does your chosen culture use bright simple colors, simple or detailed designs? Is there a reason for this? If you are focusing on only one area of your region, compare it to others and discuss why you chose a portion of your region.

ART SELECTIONS:
Following the introduction, place your selections. Begin with the write-up of the piece of art. Place the art on the following page. Unless the art was originally in black and white, include a color picture of the piece. You can scan it and print it or have it color copied. If you do not know how to use a color printer, you can make arrangements with me to have the selection done, but DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!

WORKS CITED:
Yes, these works must be listed as to their source. Include in your list the artist, as well as the source in which you found it: books, museums, CD programs, the Internet, etc. Even if it is an example you have at home, cite the owner.

THE WRITE-UP :

BASIC INFORMATION :
While everyone will write theirs differently, there are certain items you must include. Remember you are writing to someone other than me... someone who may not know anything about art. Always begin with the name of the piece. If it is unknown, say so, or at least describe it. For example: This bronze sculpture of a horse... If known, include the artist. If you know who it, include something about the artist. Where did they live, what style did they use, what influences did they have, what meaning are they trying to convey, and other details you feel are relevant. Next go into the time period of the piece. If you know the exact time, that's great. If not, ast least state what century to the best of your ability. You'll find in discussing ancient art that you will not have a date and must rely on time periods instead. For example: This sculpture is from the Neolithic period of North Africa and...

DESCRIPTIONS:
Now for the real analysis. Be sure to use as many tools as you can. Include the principles and elements of the piece. For example, the colors or designs that pull your eye in. Also use the sensual elements. That is, what memories it evokes, what you would have called it or named it if you could. Explain why you chose it. You don't have to like your piece to write a good analysis of it. You will be getting lectures on each of these styles so there is no exuse to have nothing to write about.
